How Can I Find Out Where a Photo Was Taken?.

Read a photo's embedded location data to discover where it was taken, using the GPS coordinates stored in the image file.

A photo often remembers where it was taken even when you don’t. Many cameras and phones embed GPS coordinates directly into the image file at the moment you press the shutter. When that data is present, you can recover the exact location later.

Look inside the image file

Location information, along with camera settings and the capture date, is stored as EXIF metadata inside the file itself. You don’t need to guess from landmarks or recall where you were standing—the coordinates are already there.

The Image Metadata Viewer reads this information entirely in your browser. Just upload the photo, and the tool reports the latitude, longitude and altitude if they were recorded. Where both coordinates are present, it also provides a direct link to view the location on a map.

When no location is stored

Not every photo carries coordinates. Here is why the location can be missing:

In that case the metadata viewer will simply show that no GPS coordinates were found. The file may still contain other useful details such as the make and model of the camera and the date and time it was taken.

A note on privacy

Embedded location data is useful, but it is also sensitive. When you share a photo online, consider whether you want its precise location published. Reviewing the metadata first with the Image Metadata Viewer lets you decide whether to strip that information before you upload it anywhere.
