A photograph can give a website a coherent starting point: a landscape might suggest muted greens and stone neutrals; a product photo might provide an accent color that makes the page feel connected to the item.

The trick is not to use every color in the image. A useful interface palette usually needs a small set of roles: background, surface, body text, muted text, accent and perhaps a supporting accent.

Start with extraction, then edit
