How Can I Check Whether Two Colors Have Enough Contrast?.

Two colors may look attractive together and still be hard to read. Contrast is the difference in perceived brightness between a foreground color — usually text or an icon — and its background.

Low contrast is most problematic with small text, thin fonts and bright screens outdoors. It can also make buttons and form controls difficult to recognize, even when the colors fit the brand perfectly.

Check the pair, not the palette alone

A palette can contain excellent individual colors but fail when particular pairs are used together. Always test the actual combination: dark text on a light card, white text on a coloured button, or an icon against its background.

Make small changes first

If a pair feels weak, try one of these small adjustments before abandoning the color entirely:

• darken the text color
• lighten or darken the background

Don’t rely on color alone to communicate a status such as error, success or selected state. Adding labels, icons and clear wording makes the interface much easier to understand for everyone.
